List of the Mammals recorded at Kinewell Lake

  1. Hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus: Common
  2. Mole, Talpa europaea: Numerous mole-hills. An adult mole was found burrowing near the lake November 1999
  3. Common Shrew, Sorex araneus: Common
  4. Water Shrew, Neomys fodiens: One record after the Easter 1998 floods

  5. Noctule, Nyctalus noctula: Common
  6. Pipistrelle, Pipistrellus pipistrellus: Very common

  7. Rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus: Very common

  8. Grey Squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis: Occasional in trees
  9. Field Vole, Microtus agrestis: Common
  10. Water Vole, Arvicola terrestris: Possibly returning to the river
  11. Wood Mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus: Common

  12. Fox, Vulpes vulpes: Regular
  13. Stoat, Mustela erminea: Regular
  14. Otter, Lutra lutra (pictured right): Spraints found
  15. Badger, Meles meles:Unconfirmed
  16. Muntjac, Muntiacus reevesi: Regular

We are starting trapping the small mammals to see what lives at the lake, so the list may expand. The Nature Club is doing a lot of this work.
